Also called Y U No · Why You No · Y U NO Rage Face
An exasperated figure holds out both hands as if demanding an explanation. Name the thing that is letting you down, then finish with “Y U NO” and the simple action you wish it would take.
The deliberately abbreviated question turns a small complaint into an outraged demand. The face supplies much of the intensity, so the situation itself can be ordinary.
The format often addresses objects as though they could answer: a printer that will not print, a battery that will not last, or socks that refuse to stay in pairs.
Know Your Meme traces the face to chapter 55 of the manga Gantz, published in 2002, and describes fan tracings circulating before the caption format appeared. The stick-figure treatment separates the expression from the original scene. [1]
The familiar “Y U NO” wording spread through Tumblr in 2010. An early LOLTumblrWallpapers post complained about an unanswered text message; meme generators then let users apply the same question to other frustrations. [1]
Put the subject in the empty blue area at the top. Use the blue strip below the drawing for “Y U NO” and the action that is missing.
The clipped wording is part of the format. Keep the complaint specific, and leave the face and both small hands clear.
