Two cows face the camera while a fire burns behind them. Caption their calm appearance as a suspicious denial, a farmyard grievance, or an excuse for the chaos.
The joke treats the cows as if they know more about the fire than they are admitting. Their ordinary expressions clash with the disaster behind them.
Captions often give them a shared voice. A quiet remark or a dairy pun can make the apparent innocence more suspicious than an explicit confession.
The original photographer and circumstances of the image remain unidentified in the documented meme history. Know Your Meme traces an online posting to a Fark discussion on October 22, 2002. That establishes an early appearance, not who took the photograph or what caused the fire. [1]
The Evil Cows caption series developed in May 2012. A Reddit image macro appeared on May 13, followed by khdutton’s Quickmeme post titled RetribMOOtion on May 17. The captions recast the animals as vengeful farm residents. [1]

Use the space above the cows for a request, accusation, or complaint. Place their response near the bottom, beneath the two faces.
Keep the fire visible; it supplies the contradiction. A short, understated reply lets the picture suggest more than the cows are willing to say.
