A raccoon holds its paws together with an expression that looks like a villain enjoying a plan. Give it a tiny scheme and an even tinier payoff: the more self-satisfied the plan sounds, the better.
The folded paws make an ordinary animal pose look deliberate. A caption turns that pose into the moment someone thinks they have outsmarted everyone.
This format suits harmless mischief and questionable shortcuts. The gap between a grand plotting attitude and a very small reward is often the joke.
The original photograph belongs to Flickr user Letsemgo. The photo page records it as taken on November 9, 2008 and uploaded on November 11. Its playful title imagines the raccoon thanking someone for dog food. [1]
Know Your Meme traces its caption-meme circulation to a February 9, 2011 Reddit post by Zeb1. The r/pics post is titled Evil mastermind. Captioned edits then gave the animal petty plans to match its pose. [2] [3]
Use the top caption to begin the plan and the bottom caption for the payoff. Keep the animal’s face and joined paws between them.
The plan can be mischievous or simply self-serving. A raccoon taking great pride in claiming the last biscuit fits the pose better than a long explanation of a complicated scheme.
