The format

What does Billy, What Have You Done mean?

Also called Billy WTH · Shoot Him Again · Billy What Have You Done?!

An adult is horrified by Billy’s actions, hears the other character’s explanation, then reaches for a weapon too. Fill the two empty bubbles to turn initial disapproval into an absurd change of heart.

The joke is the reversal: the explanation makes the adult abandon the objection shown in the first panel. A petty confession is treated as if it settles everything.

The violence is already drawn into this dark cartoon. The captions work by giving that extreme reaction a trivial cause, such as an irritating fictional habit or a ridiculous opinion.

Origin

A SrGrafo comic made for readers to finish.

The comic is by SrGrafo, the artist Andre Rojas. DigitalCultures places Billy, What Have You Done among his 2019 Reddit templates, which invited readers to fill in empty speech bubbles. [1]

In a May 2020 interview, SrGrafo explained that his Weekly Submission Challenge began after a reader suggested a caption contest. He described drawing comics with blank bubbles, then reviewing readers’ versions each Friday. [2]

Caption guide

Make the explanation cause the change of heart.

Leave the first panel’s printed question in place. Write the confession in the lower-left bubble, then give the adult a short response in the lower-right bubble.

The final bubble is small, and the drawing already shows the reversal. A few words acknowledging the confession are enough to finish the joke.

The confession
Inside the rectangular bubble in the lower-left panel.
The changed response
Inside the rounded bubble in the lower-right panel.
  • Use the lower-left bubble for the surprising confession.
  • Make the final response clearly react to that confession.
  • Keep the final line very short.
  • Leave the faces, printed question, and artist’s signature visible.
