What does Boardroom Meeting Suggestion mean?

Also called Boardroom Suggestion · Outlook Oust · Thrown Out of the Window

The boss asks for ideas. Two employees offer safe answers; the third gives a suggestion that gets him thrown through a window. Write the question and three replies to build the disagreement.

The familiar version makes the third employee the only person offering a useful answer. The boss’s reaction exposes a workplace that asks for ideas but does not want its assumptions challenged.

You can also make the last suggestion deliberately ridiculous. Either way, it needs to break the pattern established by the first two answers; the final panels already supply the consequence.

Origin

A Wii U joke becomes a meeting-room template.

The comic began as Outlook Oust, published on Hejibits on December 24, 2012. It imagines a Nintendo meeting about Wii U features, with DVD playback as the suggestion that earns the final employee’s ejection. [1]

Hejibits is the work of John Kleckner. In a 2013 interview, he explained that frustration with games often gave him comic ideas and that exaggerated faces were central to his punchlines. The interviewer identifies Boardroom Suggestion as one of his comics that became a meme. [2]

How the meme spread

  1. Outlook Oust is published

The Hejibits comic centers on ideas for the Wii U. [1]

  2. New meetings replace the original dialogue

Edits circulate through 4chan and Reddit, including a version about MTV programming. [1]

Caption guide

Make the third answer break the pattern.

Put the boss’s question in the top bubble. Read the three smaller bubbles from left to right: two predictable suggestions, followed by the answer the boss refuses to hear.

The reply bubbles are small. A few words in each keeps the dialogue readable and lets the faces, the pause, and the fall finish the joke.

The boss’s question
In the large speech bubble at the top.
Idea one
In the leftmost bubble in the middle panel.
Idea two
In the small central bubble.
The useful idea
In the rightmost bubble above the employee leaning on his hand.
  • Give the boss a concrete problem to solve.
  • Keep the first two answers similar in tone or usefulness.
  • Save the surprise for the rightmost employee’s bubble.
  • Leave the angry face and window scene without extra captions.
