What does Aragorn — For Frodo mean?

Also called Aragorn Black Gate · For Frodo · Aragorn Charging

Aragorn looks back at his friends, then charges toward an army. Give him a reason for the charge and label the obstacle to make an everyday task look heroic.

The upper panel supplies resolve; the lower panel shows commitment despite terrible odds. Together they suit a small act performed with far more ceremony than it needs.

You can make the joke sincere, with someone doing something difficult for a friend, or ridiculous, with a tiny reward motivating a dramatic charge.

Origin

Aragorn leads the charge at the Black Gate.

Viggo Mortensen plays Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Near the end, the remaining armies confront Sauron’s forces to give Frodo and Sam a chance to reach Mount Doom. Aragorn turns to his companions, says “For Frodo,” and charges. [1]

The scene later appeared in caption edits and image alterations. Know Your Meme records an Imgur version replacing the line with “Yolo” on January 8, 2013, and a July 2013 variation changing the dedication to Ned Stark from Game of Thrones. [1]

Caption guide

Give the charge a motive and a destination.

Place a short dedication or decision at the bottom of the upper panel. Label the opposing force in the lower panel with the task, obstacle, or temptation being faced.

A small motive paired with a large obstacle creates the contrast. Keep Aragorn’s face and the running figure clear so the shift from decision to action remains visible.

What stands in the way
Across the opposing army in the lower panel.
  • Use the upper panel for the reason to act.
