The format

What does Knights of the Round Table mean?

Also called Swords United · King Arthur Swords · Knights United

Knights point their swords toward the middle of a table. Label the people as different groups, then put the one thing they agree on where the blades meet.

The swords converge on a shared point, so the image turns agreement into a solemn pact. The joke often lies in how little these groups otherwise have in common.

The center label can name a shared complaint, a favorite thing, or an action everyone takes. It should explain why these particular groups have joined together.

Origin

A game loading screen becomes a pact between groups.

Galan Pang created this artwork for Kingdoms of Camelot. On his portfolio, he identifies it as a mobile-game loading screen and explains that the distorted perspective at the bottom leaves room for a loading bar. The illustration was made for the game, before its use as a meme. [1]

Know Your Meme documents the image in Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North by June 2014. It traces an early labeled version to @grapejuiceboys on Instagram on October 25, 2018, followed by a widely shared Reddit post three days later. [2]

How the meme spread

  1. The artwork is documented as a loading screen

Know Your Meme cites a game review showing the image before its caption-meme use. [2]

  2. Different groups acquire a shared interest

An early @grapejuiceboys post labels the knights and the point where their swords meet. [2]

  3. The format reaches MemeEconomy

ItsNoahh shares a variation on Reddit as other users begin adapting the image. [2]

Caption guide

Give the groups one convincing point of agreement.

Label the three visible figures across their armor. Put the shared interest in the open area of the table between the sword tips.

Choose groups that differ in a way the audience understands. The middle label should be specific enough to explain their unlikely agreement; “being people” does not add much.

What unites them
Between the sword tips at the center of the table.
  • Use short group names.
  • Make the center label apply to every group.
  • Leave faces and most of the blades visible.
  • You can label more swords, but three groups are enough.
