Also called Talking Onion · Onion Insult Comic · Crying Onion Meme
Someone confidently prepares to cut an onion. The onion says something unexpectedly upsetting, and the person bursts into tears. Add the one line that proves the opening claim wrong.
The onion causes tears through words instead of being chopped. That change is the entire joke: confidence in the first panel, a painful reminder in the second, and the result in the third.
The reminder can be wistful or comically minor. A long-lost game save and an empty biscuit tin produce different kinds of disappointment, but both fit the same structure.
An earlier version of the talking-onion joke appeared in Drawing Board’s “Onions” comic on May 30, 2010. A person preparing to slice the vegetable is brought to tears by what it says. [1] [2]
A similar paint-style comic circulated on Reddit in February 2011. Later edits replaced the onion’s words, including documented versions from 2015, 2016, and 2017. This page uses a three-panel redraw; the early record does not establish who made this particular rendering. [1]
The comic uses a talking onion’s comments as the cause of tears. [1] [2]
The joke appears in a simpler paint-style drawing. [1]
Edits replace the middle-panel line with new sources of disappointment. [1]
Put the line in the open white area beside the onion in the middle panel. The opening statement and the crying reaction are already in the image.
Choose a short reminder whose emotional effect is clear. Leave the final panel alone so the tears deliver the response.
