Give a small realization the expression of a life-changing discovery. Everyone around him is still partying; he has just remembered something.
The man in the white shirt stares past the crowd as though a thought has stopped him in his tracks. Your caption supplies that thought.
The funny part is often how ordinary the discovery is. Remembering a setting on your alarm can look as momentous as solving a mystery. You can also use a delayed practical realization: the downhill walk eventually means a climb home.
The photograph comes from coverage of the Schoolies festival on Australia’s Gold Coast, submitted to the Australian Associated Press on November 21, 2009. The meme gives the person in the white shirt an imagined realization; the photograph itself does not establish what he was thinking. [1]
On November 23, 2011, Reddit user NorthernSkeptic posted a captioned version titled “Introducing Sudden Clarity Clarence” to r/AdviceAnimals. [1]
Put a short realization along the bottom, below the central face. The crowded background already supplies the interruption; no second character needs a label.
Try stating a small fact as though you have only just worked it out. A first-person sentence keeps the thought inside the pictured person’s head.
