Squidward watches from a dark room while SpongeBob and Patrick play outside. Label the person stuck inside and the people enjoying themselves to show the feeling of missing out.
The window separates the observer from the fun. Captions often make Squidward the person with an unfinished task, a later deadline, or some other reason they cannot join in.
The same view can also express irritation at other people having noisy fun. Choose whether the person inside wishes they could join or wishes everyone outside would stop, then make the labels support that reading.
The image comes from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode That Sinking Feeling, from 2010. SpongeBob and Patrick’s play disturbs Squidward; the episode follows their attempt to connect their houses with a tunnel. [1] [2]
Know Your Meme records a December 8, 2013 Tumblr post by heliolisk using the image to identify with Squidward. Later captions recast his view as envy of people who are free to enjoy themselves. [2]
Squidward watches his neighbors from inside his house in the SpongeBob SquarePants episode. [1]
Heliolisk posts the image with a caption about feeling a personal connection to Squidward. [2]
Documented gaming examples label the characters or use the view for missing out on a new release. [2]
Place the first label over Squidward’s lower body on the left. Put the second in the lower part of the window, beneath SpongeBob and Patrick, so their happy faces remain visible.
Treat the two characters outside as one group unless the joke needs a distinction. Naming the reason Squidward is stuck makes the contrast clearer than simply labeling him “Me.”
