Player 001 smiles in one picture and sits alone in the other. Use the two sides for a good mood followed by disappointment, or the plan followed by what actually happened.
The same person appears in both panels, which makes the change in mood immediate. The left caption supplies the hopeful moment; the right explains what took the excitement away.
A small change can carry the joke: buying something versus paying for it, making plans versus keeping them, or beginning a task versus discovering its details.

The sitting image first circulated on its own. Know Your Meme records a September 27, 2021 post by @GQBKR about being made to go out to a club. It then documents Shami1111 combining the smiling and sitting pictures on Reddit on October 7. [2]
Write the hopeful situation along the bottom of the left panel. Put the disappointing counterpart along the bottom of the right. Leave both faces visible.
Keep the captions similar in length and sentence structure. If the second one only says “sad,” replace it with the event that caused the change.
