Also called Out of Reach Balloon · Pink Creature Holding Me Back
A figure reaches for a yellow balloon, then a pink creature pulls them back. Label the person, the goal, and the obstacle to show what keeps an ordinary ambition just out of reach.
The upper panel makes the goal look attainable. The lower panel reveals the thing preventing progress, giving the obstacle a body and a very firm grip.
The obstacle can be an outside problem or your own habit. A small, familiar interruption often makes the contrast clearer than an abstract label such as life.
Know Your Meme credits the comic to Superlmer and records its Facebook publication on April 21, 2017. In that version, the yellow balloon represents opportunities and the pink figure represents shyness. [1]
A Russian-language variation about trying to go to bed early appeared roughly two weeks later. Further versions circulated on 9GAG in December 2017 and Reddit in November 2018, changing the labels while keeping the same physical struggle. [1]
The original labels turn the reaching figure’s problem into a conflict between opportunities and shyness. [1]
An early documented variation applies the comic to going to bed on time. [1]
A documented Reddit example continues the practice of replacing the goal and obstacle. [1]
Put the person’s label on the grey body in the upper panel, the goal inside the yellow balloon, and the obstacle on the pink body below. Keep the faces and grasping hands visible.
The goal and obstacle should clearly conflict. If one is an early bedtime, the other might be an absorbing book or an unexpected call. The picture explains the rest.
