The format

What does Bike Fall mean?

Also called Bâton Roue · Stick in Bicycle Wheel · Cyclist Blaming Others

A cyclist puts a stick into his own wheel and falls. Label the rider, the choice that stops him, and the complaint afterward to show someone blaming the wrong thing for a problem they caused.

The reader sees the cause before the rider reacts to the result. A final caption that blames something else makes the mistake especially obvious.

You can also use it for an honest admission of self-sabotage. In that version, the rider knows exactly what went wrong and still made the unhelpful choice.

Origin

Corentin Penloup’s three-panel Bâton Roue comic.

French illustrator Corentin Penloup published the comic on his art blog on January 23, 2011. The original sequence already contains the whole action: a rider carries a stick, puts it in the wheel, and ends up on the ground. [2] [1]

Later captioned versions turned the fall into an argument about responsibility. Labels identify the rider and the harmful choice, while a complaint in the last panel often directs blame somewhere else. [2]

Caption guide

Show the decision before the misplaced blame.

Identify the rider in the open space to his right in the first panel. Describe the action in the open space at the left of the second. Put the reaction on the road in the lower-left corner of the last panel.

The action should explain the failure without extra context. For the classic blame joke, make the final line complain about something other than that action.

The self-defeating choice
In the open left side of the middle panel.
The complaint afterward
On the road in the lower-left part of the last panel.
  • Keep the stick and wheel unobstructed.
  • Make the middle caption the cause of the fall.
  • Use the last panel for the complaint.
  • Keep the artwork credit with shared examples.
