Also called Obama Giving Himself a Medal · Obama Medal Meme · Obama Giving Obama an Award
An edited photograph shows Obama giving a medal to another Obama. Use it for self-congratulation, praise from your own account, or an award whose judge and winner are the same person.
The doubled face makes the source of the praise obvious. The joke is about someone recognizing their own achievement, however small or questionable.
It can also show an organization grading its own work. Keep the caption focused on who is doing the congratulating and why they might not be impartial.
The original photograph shows Barack Obama presenting Bruce Springsteen with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on November 22, 2016. Springsteen’s official website records the ceremony. In the meme edit, the recipient’s face is replaced with Obama’s. [1] [2]
Know Your Meme documents the edit in a January 11, 2017 satirical article on The Barbed Wire. The image’s editor is not identified there. It later became a caption format about congratulating or rewarding yourself. [2]
The award ceremony provides the photograph that is later altered. [1] [2]
The Barbed Wire publishes the self-award image in a fictional story. [2]
Know Your Meme records renewed interest following a June 21 Reddit post. [2]
A single caption along the bottom can identify the act of self-praise. Leave both faces visible so the viewer notices that the presenter and recipient match.
Write from your own point of view for a light joke, or name a fictional team judging its own performance. The source image is an edit, not a real self-award ceremony.
