Arthur Fleck smiles at a joke he does not explain. Add a question about an inside joke, obscure interest, or private memory and let the printed reply do the work.
The response suggests that the explanation would take too long or make no sense without shared context. It can make a tiny private joke sound much more mysterious than it is.
The format also fits a hobby that is difficult to explain to outsiders. The humor works best when the situation is recognizable, even if the imagined listener does not understand it.
Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck says the line near the end of Joker, released in US theaters on October 4, 2019. During an interview with a psychiatrist, he laughs at a thought and declines to explain the joke. [1]
Know Your Meme documents a Reddit adaptation from October 12, 2019. A widely shared post followed on October 18, and additional versions spread through Reddit and Instagram later that month. [1]
Add a short question across the upper edge, above Arthur’s eyes. Leave his expression and the subtitle unobstructed.
Choose something concrete: an old group-chat phrase, a collection, or a repeated routine. The existing reply supplies the deliberately unhelpful explanation.
