Also called Patrick Raises His Hand · Patrick’s Band Question · SpongeBob Mayonnaise Meme
Patrick raises his hand during band practice with a question that misses the point. Replace his question with a hopeful attempt to count one thing as something else.
The raised hand makes an absurd question look completely sincere. It fits someone trying to classify an easy substitute as the real task.
The best question has an obvious gap between its two ideas. Buying the equipment is not the same as practicing, just as Patrick’s condiment is not a musical instrument.
The image comes from “Band Geeks,” a 2001 episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. Squidward assembles a band, and Patrick asks whether mayonnaise qualifies as an instrument. [1] [2]
The line developed a life beyond the episode: Know Your Meme records a Facebook page named after it in November 2009, a YouTube scene upload in August 2010, and remix videos in 2011. Caption edits replace the question’s subject or the category being proposed. [2]
Patrick asks his famously misplaced question during rehearsal. [1] [2]
A Facebook fan page documents the quote’s online following. [2]
A standalone clip helps the short exchange circulate. [2]
The line appears in fan-made video edits. [2]
Write one short “Is…” question across the lower part of the frame. Leave Patrick’s raised hand and expression visible.
Choose two things that the speaker wishes were equivalent. The question should sound earnest even when the answer is plainly no.
