A dog in safety glasses stands beside laboratory equipment. Add the task you confidently accepted and the admission that you are making it up as you go.
The equipment suggests expertise, but the dog makes that assumption absurd. The image fits the gap between looking prepared and knowing what to do next.
It works as a confession about your own uncertainty: following a tutorial, inheriting a spreadsheet, or trying a recipe with instructions that suddenly become vague.
The wider “I have no idea what I’m doing” format first paired the line with a dog posed at a camera. Know Your Meme documents Ben “The Frogman” Grelle’s captioned version on Tumblr on February 27, 2011. [1]
The chemistry-dog version shown here was documented on Lolabego’s Tumblr on June 17, 2011. That dates an early captioned use of this laboratory image; it does not identify who staged or photographed the original scene. [1]
Use the open space to the upper left of the dog for the task or claim. Put the honest admission across the bottom. Leave the safety glasses and face unobstructed.
A specific task gives the confession somewhere to land. Repeating the catchphrase is fine, but naming the point where you got lost makes the joke your own.
