The format

What does Doge mean?

Also called Doge 2 · Kabosu · Such Wow · Shiba Inu Doge

Kabosu sits on a sofa with crossed paws and a sideways look. Surround her with short, oddly phrased thoughts to give a small discovery the excitement of a dog’s internal monologue.

Doge captions sound delighted, suspicious, or impressed without becoming full sentences. Words such as “such,” “much,” and “very” lead into deliberately awkward phrases.

The scattered thoughts should all point to one subject. Three comments about a new job or a snack are easier to follow than three unrelated jokes.

Origin

A pet photograph becomes an inner monologue.

The dog is Kabosu, a Shiba Inu photographed by her owner, Atsuko Sato. Sato published sofa photographs of Kabosu on her personal blog on February 13, 2010. The dog’s sideways look became the best-known face of Doge. [1] [2]

Doge developed around captioned dog pictures shared on Tumblr and other sites. Short, intentionally unusual phrases and colorful Comic Sans text became part of the format, which spread widely in 2013. [2]

How the meme spread

  1. Kabosu appears on her owner’s blog

Sato’s post predates the later English-language caption format. [1] [2]

  2. A dedicated Reddit community opens

The r/Doge community begins sharing captioned Shiba Inu images and videos. [2]

  3. YouTube adds a Doge search joke

Searching for the meme changes YouTube’s text styling to colorful Comic Sans. [2]

Caption guide

Write a few thoughts around the face.

Give each caption two or three words. Keep them in the open spaces beside Kabosu rather than covering her eyes or crossed paws.

Start with a subject, then write separate reactions to it. The examples use three text boxes; you can change their colors and fonts in the editor.

much thought

  • Keep the grammar play intentional.
  • Use one shared topic for all the thoughts.
  • Try different readable colors.
  • Leave Kabosu’s eyes and paws uncovered.
