The format

What does Church Gun mean?

Also called Assassination Chain · Person of Interest Church Standoff · Tricky Situation

Three people sit in a row with one threatening the next. A wider shot reveals a fourth person watching them from above. Label each figure to build a chain of problems, with one final obstacle still waiting.

Each new figure undercuts the one before it. The last reveal makes the apparent winner in the upper picture just another part of the chain.

This structure suits tasks that depend on other tasks, attempts to solve a problem that create another problem, or competing forces that keep one another in check.

Origin

A church standoff in Person of Interest.

The images come from “The Cold War,” season four, episode ten of Person of Interest, which aired on December 16, 2014. Jeremy Lambert, Root, Martine Rousseau, and John Reese form the chain of threats inside the church. [1] [2]

A single-picture version was shared in the show’s Reddit community in September 2018. A two-picture version and blank template circulated in January 2019, with the wider shot supplying the extra participant that makes the chain extend beyond the first image. [2] [3]

Caption guide

Build the chain from left to right, then reveal the last link.

Label the three figures across the top on their dark clothing. Put the fourth label on the dark foreground figure in the lower-right of the wider shot.

Make each step affect the previous one. The fourth caption should add a new complication or override the third, so the lower picture changes how the first picture reads.

The starting point
On the left man’s suit in the upper picture.
What threatens the first
On the middle woman’s dark clothing.
What threatens the second
On the right woman’s dark clothing.
The final complication
On the dark foreground figure in the lower-right.
  • Use four short, connected labels.
  • Keep the guns and faces visible so the chain is clear.
  • Save the final reveal for the foreground figure below.
  • Use everyday obstacles for an exaggerated standoff.
