What does Phone Dog: Four-Panel Call mean?

Also called Yes This Is Dog · Dog on the Phone · Chien au téléphone

A black dog listens to a phone in four pictures, moving from an open-mouthed look to closed eyes. Write a short call that starts politely and ends with unwelcome news.

The changing expression supplies the reaction to a conversation we cannot hear. The last picture can stand for disappointment, resignation, or a wish for the call to end.

Four panels give you room for a greeting, a question, a reveal, and a final response. The words can stay simple because the face carries the change in mood.

Origin

A different image from the original phone-dog meme.

The earlier Yes, This Is Dog meme used a black Labrador with a telephone receiver in a frame from the 1984 film Pejzaži u magli. Know Your Meme documents that caption on Tumblr in October 2011. This four-photo smartphone collage is a different image; the film date and early Tumblr post belong to the predecessor, not these photographs. [1]

Caption guide

Write a short call with a change of mood.

Read the pictures left to right across the top, then across the bottom. Put one short line on the chest in each panel, clear of the eyes and phone.

Use the first two lines to establish the call, the third to reveal the problem, and the closed-eye picture for the final response. Dog-related details can work, but an ordinary customer-service call fits too.

The greeting
On the dog’s chest in the upper-left picture.
The question
On the dog’s chest in the upper-right picture.
The unexpected news
On the dog’s chest in the lower-left picture.
The final response
On the dog’s chest in the lower-right picture.
  • Keep each panel to a few words.
  • Follow the four-picture reading order.
  • Let the third line change the mood.
  • Keep the small original credit at the bottom visible.
