Also called Thick Book vs. Thin Book · Books With and Without · Big Book Small Book Meme
A very thick book sits beside a thin one. Label them to compare a long version with what remains after removing the filler, repetition, or one surprisingly important ingredient.
The books make a difference in quantity immediately visible. The thick volume stands for everything; the thin one shows how little is left after a change.
The comparison can criticize padding or highlight what dominates a subject. It can also contrast a large amount of discussion with a much smaller amount of useful information.
Know Your Meme traces the format’s spread to June 17, 2019 posts by Reddit user CosmowYoung. The captions compared Greek mythology with a much shorter version that removed Zeus’s romantic exploits. [1]
Reposts reached other Reddit communities within hours. New versions compared subjects with and without a particular feature, including examples about fictional stories and history. The record documents the meme’s circulation, not who originally photographed the books. [1]
Put the full version above the thick book on the left. Put the reduced version above the thin book on the right.
The reader should immediately understand what was removed. Keep both labels short enough that the dramatic difference between the books stays the main feature.
