The dog tells the joke, delivers the pun, then looks delighted with itself. Write a short setup and a groan-worthy answer; the last photo supplies all the laughter you need.
The three photos make a complete delivery: a quiet opening, a more animated response, and a close-up grin. The final expression makes the dog seem much prouder of the joke than the listener is.
Use wordplay that is easy to recognize, even if it deserves a groan. The dog’s confidence is part of the joke, so the pun does not need to be clever enough to impress anyone.
Reddit user lawlissmodia posted the photographs to r/aww on October 30, 2012, under the title “He loves his baby.” In the comments, the poster identifies the dog as an Alaskan Klee Kai, despite the meme’s later Pun Husky nickname. [1] [2]
A captioned version of the multi-panel image appeared on r/funny in March 2013. More pun versions followed in 2014, when coverage helped establish the name Bad Pun Dog. [2]

Reddit posts and humor sites spread new jokes using the same three photographs. [2]
Put the setup near the bottom of the first photo and the pun near the bottom of the second. The larger third photo is the reaction, so these examples leave it without a caption.
Keep the setup brief enough that readers reach the wordplay before the grin. Animal words such as paw, bark, and fetch give you an obvious place to start.
