Thanos recalls being dismissed as a madman. Add a caption about an unpopular prediction or an odd precaution that later seems justified.
The line gives the speaker a moment of vindication: people doubted the idea, and events now appear to support it. The humor often comes from applying that grand claim to something minor.
A useful caption tells us both what seemed excessive and why it paid off. The printed quotation can then serve as the speaker’s self-satisfied response.
