A stern painted face appears on a blue, yellow, and white background. Pair an impressive act of creation with an oddly inconvenient detail that came with it.
Advice God gives a grand, authoritative figure a petty or contradictory decision. The top line establishes something generous or powerful; the bottom reveals the awkward catch.
The format has a history of religious satire, but a caption can also joke about everyday design complaints: why a pleasant thing seems to come bundled with a nuisance. Those captions are invented jokes, rather than quotations from scripture.
The face is cut from Michelangelo’s depiction of God in Creation of the Sun, Moon and Plants on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The original fresco shows God creating the heavenly bodies and vegetation; the meme isolates the head on a colored background. [1] [2]
Know Your Meme documents an Advice God page on MemeGenerator by August 2010 and a Reddit compilation on October 9 that year. Early captions often used the figure to satirize perceived religious contradictions. [2]
Put the creation or generous decision at the top and the consequence at the bottom. Use the same implied speaker in both lines, as though the figure is explaining his own questionable planning.
Keep the connection easy to see. A pleasant weekend and rain on both days belong together; two unrelated complaints do not build the same joke.
