Also called Natalia Poklonskaya Behind Microphones · Unequal Attention Press Conference · One Microphone vs Many
Two people share a table, but almost every microphone points toward the person on the right. Label the overlooked subject, the subject getting attention, and the audience doing the listening.
The contrast is about unequal attention. One thing may deserve careful discussion while something small, new, or distracting receives all the questions.
It also works without judging the preference. A cat choosing the box over the toy or a group discussing dessert instead of dinner can make the imbalance clear.
The photograph shows Natalia Poklonskaya, who served as Crimea’s prosecutor in 2014, seated beside another man at a press conference. Know Your Meme identifies a March 2014 Kazan First report containing photographs from the event. [1]
The image circulated online in 2014 and returned as a widely shared object-labeling format in January 2019. Captions assign new subjects to the two speakers and turn the uneven microphones into a measure of attention. [1]
Label the man on the left with the overlooked subject and the woman on the right with the attention-grabber. A third label over the microphones can identify the audience.
Keep the two subject labels comparable. A release note and a typo, or a toy and its box, make the unequal response easy to understand.
