A man stands beside a grill beneath a ready-made reply. Add the story he is responding to in the white space above the picture, turning a lengthy explanation into a remarkably short acknowledgment.
The mismatch between the setup and the brief reply does the work. Someone may be sharing a complicated story while the listener remains occupied with the food.
The response can sound politely interested, distracted, or unwilling to enter a debate. Make that reading clear through the setup rather than claiming to know what the photographed person was actually thinking.
Write the setup in the white band at the top. The large text already on the photograph supplies the response, so there is no need to repeat it or cover the man and grill.
Choose an explanation that sounds longer than the listener’s available attention. A few details can suggest a much bigger story without filling the whole image with text.
