Rick promises a quick trip; the next panel shows both travelers exhausted. Add the supposedly easy task above the promise and the long, messy outcome above the aftermath.
The joke is the gap between an optimistic estimate and what the task actually demands. The existing “20 minute adventure” subtitle supplies the confidence before the lower panel takes it away.
Use it for an errand, a repair, or a small project that consumes far more time than anyone expected. Both characters look worn out, so the outcome should feel more involved than a minor delay.
The scene opens Rest and Ricklaxation, the sixth episode of Rick and Morty’s third season. Rick invites Morty on a short adventure that instead lasts six days and leaves both of them shaken. [2]
Adult Swim promoted the episode for August 27, 2017. Within the following week, captioned versions were using the promise and aftermath as a comparison between a plan and its consequences. [1] [2]
Put your setup along the top of the first panel. Leave Rick’s existing subtitle in place. Put the outcome in the open space above the characters in the lower panel.
The second caption should follow from the first task. A setting change that turns into a reinstall works because the extra work comes from trying to finish the original job.
