The effort of keeping one thought to yourself has become visible. Give this strained expression a comment, a laugh, or a secret that is getting harder to hold in.
The close-up emphasizes the boy’s tense face and prominent veins. In a caption, that visible effort can stand for the struggle to keep a reaction private.
Use it for the moment just before someone laughs, blurts out a correction, or gives away a surprise. The joke is the gap between staying silent and looking anything but calm.
Michael McGee told The Daily Dot that his friend Mathew photographed him making the face in class around October 2013. They wanted to make a funny tweet. The pose was deliberate; the later “holding in a fart” caption invented a situation for it. [1]
A March 2, 2014 post in Reddit’s r/funny used that caption and helped establish the image as a reaction format. Subsequent captions broadened the idea to other things someone is struggling to keep in. [2]
Put the caption over the hoodie near the bottom. Leave the forehead, face, and neck visible: those details supply the sense of effort.
“Trying not to” is a useful start, but a label such as “Me keeping the surprise” also works. Pick a reaction that would be easy to imagine escaping at the wrong moment.
