Also called Man Hammering Nails into Sand · Nailing Down the Sea · Nails at the Water’s Edge
A man hammers nails into the sand at the edge of the water. Use the image for a determined effort that cannot hold back the problem.
The tiny line of nails looks hopelessly inadequate beside the water. That mismatch suits busywork, temporary fixes, and attempts to control something that keeps moving.
The joke can target the method rather than the person. A small measure looks absurd when it is expected to solve a problem much larger than itself.
Label the work beside the man and the larger problem on the open water. Leave the hammer, hand, and nails visible.
Choose a fix with an obvious limitation. The more clearly the labels relate, the less explanation the picture needs.

A finished chore feels tiny beside everything still waiting.
The proposed solution uses the very thing that is causing the trouble.
