Morpheus looks as though he is about to reveal a hidden truth. Start with “What if I told you” and finish with the everyday observation he wants everyone to take seriously.
The expression gives an ordinary statement the weight of a life-changing revelation. The punchline can point out a simple alternative, challenge a habit, or state something embarrassingly obvious.
The opening phrase belongs to the meme. Morpheus does not say that exact line in the 1999 film.
The image shows Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus in The Matrix (1999). The familiar “What if I told you” introduction is a meme paraphrase of his revelatory role, rather than a quotation from that film. [1]
Know Your Meme documents a February 11, 2012 Reddit post by haveacigaro titled Morpheus Uses a Mac. A March 2012 variation and later image macros helped establish Morpheus as a voice for supposedly surprising facts and advice. [1]
His role as a guide to hidden reality gives the later meme its serious tone. [1]
Morpheus Uses a Mac is shared on Reddit. [1]
Variations reuse the character to present an observation as a discovery. [1]
Put the familiar opening at the top and the revelation at the bottom. Leave the sunglasses and expression unobstructed.
The ending should stand on its own. A concise observation about a common habit usually works better than a paragraph of explanation.
