The format

What does We’re the Millers: Four-Panel Comparison mean?

Also called You Guys Are Getting Paid? Four Panels · Wait You Guys Get That? · Unequal Rewards Meme

Four people compare what they received, and the last discovers that everyone else got something. Start with a generous benefit, reduce it as the conversation continues, and save having none for the final face.

The first people are arguing over how much they got. The final speaker has a more basic problem: they did not know the benefit existed at all.

The four-picture layout lets you establish the unfair comparison before the last question. It can be about money, treats, time off, game rewards, or any perk distributed unevenly.

Origin

Kenny learns that the pretend family has a payment arrangement.

The scene comes from the 2013 comedy We’re the Millers. David Clark, played by Jason Sudeikis, is confronted about unequal payments to the people posing as his family. Kenny Rossmore, played by Will Poulter, is surprised to discover that the others are receiving payment at all. [1]

The reaction became a reusable meme by early 2019. Know Your Meme documents a January 7 Reddit version about Mafia City, followed by further payment comparisons. This four-panel layout includes the discussion that makes Kenny’s final question land. [1]

How the meme spread

  2. An early captioned version appears on Reddit

  3. More reward comparisons spread

Further Reddit posts use the surprised question for people left out of a benefit. [1]

Caption guide

Make the last person miss the benefit entirely.

Read left to right across the top row, then left to right across the bottom. Keep the first three captions about differing amounts of the same thing.

Use the bottom-right panel for the question that changes the comparison. The final speaker should be surprised that anyone got the benefit, not merely unhappy with a smaller share.

  • Put one short line on each person’s clothing.
  • Keep the amounts easy to compare.
  • Leave all four expressions visible.
  • Save the absence of any reward for the last panel.
