Gi-hun is about to fall, and Ali catches his shirt just in time. Label the falling player as the thing in trouble and Ali as the person, habit, or tool keeping it going.
Gi-hun leans forward on the left while Ali holds him up from behind on the right. The grip makes the relationship clear: one is in danger of failing, and the other prevents it.
The scene works as a thank-you or as an exaggeration of how much something depends on a small bit of help. A phone at one percent and a borrowed charger are enough for the two roles.
In Squid Game’s Red Light, Green Light sequence, Gi-hun trips and Ali grabs his shirt from behind. Netflix’s interview with Anupam Tripathi, who plays Ali, describes the catch as saving Gi-hun’s life. [1]
The rescue became a caption format in which the two players stand for something struggling and whatever supports it. Know Your Meme included the moment in an October 2021 roundup of the show’s meme formats. [2]
Know Your Meme’s coverage of Squid Game highlights Ali holding another player upright during Red Light, Green Light. [2]
Put the struggling person or project over Gi-hun on the left. Put its support over Ali’s upper body on the right, keeping their faces and the gripping hand visible.
The connection should make sense without a long explanation. A small, familiar rescue often reads faster than a list of everything going wrong.
