The format

What does Simba Shadowy Place mean?

Also called What About That Shadowy Place · Everything the Light Touches · Mufasa Warns Simba

Mufasa gives Simba the tour, Simba spots an exception, and Mufasa explains why they avoid it. Use the last panel to reveal the one cupboard, folder, or topic nobody wants to open.

The first panel establishes a comfortable territory. Simba’s question interrupts the tour, and Mufasa’s answer supplies the exception that makes the joke.

Unlike the single-image Lion King template, this version has room for a warning. The forbidden place can be very ordinary: an old group chat, a drawer of tangled cables, or a folder nobody maintains.

Origin

Simba asks about the place beyond the kingdom.

The three frames come from Disney’s 1994 animated film The Lion King. During Mufasa’s sunrise lesson, Simba asks about a dark area beyond their kingdom. Mufasa tells him he must not go there. [1] [2]

Online versions replace the kingdom and its boundary with other communities or spaces. This image keeps Simba’s question printed in the middle, so the new captions only need to establish the territory and explain the exception. [2]

How the meme spread

  1. The animated film opens widely in the U.S.

  2. A captioned version appears on 4chan

Know Your Meme records an early edit that uses the scene to warn about an online community. [2]

  3. An early surviving edit is posted to DeviantArt

User GhostlyFox-Akihiko shares another version of the altered conversation. [2]

Caption guide

Give the tour, then explain the place you left out.

Put your introduction in the sky above Mufasa and Simba in the first panel. The question in the middle is already part of the image. Add the reply at the bottom of the last panel.

Make the reply fit the place you introduced. An office tour might end at an abandoned project; a kitchen tour might end at the cupboard of mismatched lids.

Our whole kingdom
The place Mufasa introduces in the first panel.
The place we avoid
Mufasa’s explanation in the final panel.
  • Let the printed middle question connect your two captions.
  • Make the forbidden place specific enough to picture.
  • Keep the first caption short so it stays above the silhouettes.
