What does Jesse, What Are You Talking About? mean?

Also called Jesse WTF Are You Talking About · Jesse, What the Fuck Are You Talking About · Walter and Jesse Diner Conversation

Jesse explains, Walter asks, and the explanation only gets less helpful. Use five short lines to turn specialist jargon, a complicated hobby, or office language into a conversation going nowhere.

Jesse gets three speaking turns and Walter gets two. That leaves room for an unfamiliar idea, a confused question, an attempted explanation, and a final request for plain language.

The joke depends on the gap between the speakers. Jesse thinks the explanation is obvious; Walter is still trying to understand the first sentence.

Origin

Two diner scenes feed the same confused-conversation joke.

These frames show Walter White and Jesse Pinkman at Denny’s in “Box Cutter,” the first episode of Breaking Bad’s fourth season, which aired on July 17, 2011. Both characters wear matching graphic T-shirts in this scene. [1] [2]

The broader meme also uses a different restaurant scene from El Camino. An early March 2020 edit used that film scene to explain the slang term “based.” Later versions used both scenes for invented conversations; the meme’s dialogue is not the original script. [1]
