What does El Risitas — Spanish Laughing Guy mean?

Also called Spanish Laughing Guy · Juan Joya Borja Laughing · KEKW Laughing Man

El Risitas is laughing too hard to keep a straight face. Pair a confident promise with the ridiculous reality, or use the picture as a reaction to a story that has fallen apart.

The open laugh turns the caption into something the speaker can barely finish saying. It works for a ridiculous excuse, a promise nobody believes, or a mistake that has become funny.

A setup and payoff can fit above and below the face. For a reaction, one short caption explaining what you just heard can be enough.

Origin

A restaurant story becomes an international laughing reaction.

The photograph shows Spanish comedian Juan Joya Borja, known as El Risitas, during a 2007 Ratones Coloraos interview with Jesús Quintero. He was telling a story about kitchen pans left in the sea while working at a beach restaurant. [1]

Online edits later added invented subtitles about unrelated subjects, including technology and games. Those subtitles are parody, not translations of his story. A close-up from the interview also became the KEKW emote, submitted to FrankerFaceZ by Keesual in 2019. [1] [2] [3]

How the meme spread

  1. The laughing interview reaches YouTube

Know Your Meme dates the interview and an upload by the Jesús Quintero channel to this month. [1]

  2. A technology parody adds new subtitles

ClukosGaming shares a fictional GTX 970 interview, one of the edits documented in the format’s spread. [1]

  3. KEKW is submitted

Keesual turns the laughing face into a custom Twitch emote on FrankerFaceZ. [2] [3]

Caption guide

Set up the promise, then reveal what really happened.

Put the setup along the top edge and the payoff at the bottom. The face needs room: its expression is more important than an extra sentence.

Write an original joke in your own context. If you use a quotation, make it clear that the words are part of your caption rather than something said in the interview.

The setup
Across the top, above the eyes.
The payoff
Across the bottom, beneath the mouth.
  • Keep the eyes and mouth visible.
  • Use the bottom line for the reveal.
  • Try a promise followed by an absurd delay.
  • Let the laugh provide the reaction.
