Gru lays out a plan, spots the catch, then celebrates a way forward. Use the fifth board for a recovery, a silver lining, or a second twist after the familiar four-panel setback.
The extra panel changes the ending. A mistake that would finish the four-panel version now has room for a solution or an unexpected benefit.
Repeat the problem on boards three and four to give Gru time to notice it. The fifth board should explain why he looks pleased again, rather than simply repeating the same problem a third time.
The images come from Despicable Me (2010). Gru’s pitch to steal the Moon is interrupted by an unwanted drawing among his presentation pages. The four-panel Gru’s Plan meme spread on Reddit in March 2018. [1]
This five-panel variation adds a pleased, clenched-fist reaction beneath the usual confused glance. It gives the caption writer another board for a happier ending or a new interpretation of the mistake. [2]
Read the top two rows from left to right, then finish on the large bottom panel. Put all five captions inside the pale boards and keep them short.
Give the plan a clear goal and action. Repeat the setback across the middle row, then end with the discovery that makes Gru celebrate.
